BIOGRAPHY - Barry Wordsworth
In April 2007 Barry Wordsworth was appointed Music Director of the Royal Ballet Covent Garden, having previously held the position from 1990-1995. He is also Music Director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet and Principal Conductor of the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra. In October 2006 he became Conductor Laureate of the BBC Concert Orchestra, having served as its Principal Conductor since 1989.
In 1989, Barry Wordsworth made his first televised appearance at the BBC Proms, and he has conducted the BBC Concert Orchestra regularly in subsequent seasons of the Proms. He has also toured extensively with the orchestra, including tours to Japan and to the United States for their 50th Anniversary in 2002.
Highlights in recent seasons have included guest appearances with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, Seoul Philharmonic, Guangzhou Symphony, Rotterdam Philharmonic, New Zealand Symphony and Sydney Symphony as part of the Sydney Festival. In the UK, Barry Wordsworth has conducted the Philharmonia Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
In addition to his symphonic career, Mr Wordsworth has enjoyed a long and close relationship both the Royal Ballet in London and the Birmingham Royal Ballet. In recent seasons, he has also conducted productions for the New National Theatre Tokyo (including the Macmillan 'Manon'), the Leipzig Ballet, and the ballet of the Opera National de Paris, where in June 2007 he conducted 'La Fille Mal Gardée'.
Barry Wordsworth has a large catalogue of recordings and has made commercial releases for all the UK based companies, including a long association with Argo/Decca International. His recording of the "Last Night of the Proms" with the BBC Concert Orchestra for Phillips Classics has achieved enormous popular success. His most recent release, an album with Bryn Terfel and the London Symphony Orchestra on the Deutsche Grammophon label, won a Grammy Award in 2007.
Barry Wordsworth holds honorary doctorates from the University of Brighton and the University of Central England in Birmingham, and in 2006 he was made an Honorary Fellow of Trinity College of Music in London.
BIOGRAPHY - Bibi Heal
Bibi graduated from the University of East Anglia with a First Class degree in Music. She completed her postgraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music with Janet Price and went on to study with Graeme Danby and Jonathan Papp. She has been working recently in several private masterclasses with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.
Bibi's opera engagements include Handel Saul, Barbarina (Marriage of Figaro) and Street Child (The Pied Piper) for Opera North, Susanna (Marriage of Figaro), and Gretel (Hansel & Gretel) for Eastern Opera, and Barbarina (Le Nozze di Figaro) in the Gstaad Festival, Switzerland alongside Barbara Bonney and Gerald Finley. Bibi has taken part in many collaborative projects, including Essence; Opera North and Walker Dance Park Music; Don Giovanni, Opera North and Kneehigh Theatre; Echo & Narcissus, Cathy Marsden and ROH2; and La Boheme, ENO. She also performed Stephen McNeff's The Names of the Dead with the Ensemble of Opera North for the Fuse Leeds 06 Contemporary Music Festival, and sang Fairy in the Royal Ballet's production of Mendelssohn's The Dream at The Royal Opera House as part of the Ashton 100 Celebrations.
Oratorio performances include Mendelssohn Elijah and Elgar The Apostles in the Barbican Concert Hall, Holst Choral Symphony in Glasgow City Hall, Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem in Arundel Cathedral, Mozart Mass in C Minor in York Minster, Dvorák Te Deum in Guildford Cathedral, Haydn Creation in St John's, Smith Square, Mozart Exsultate, Jubilate for Henley Festival, and Orff Carmina Burana in the Royal Albert Hall. On the concert platform, recent performances include Strauss Four Last Songs in York, and in Brighton Dome conducted by Paul Daniel, and Fauré Requiem in Westminster Cathedral with The Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Pierre-André Valade.
Bibi's future engagements include Elijah in St Alban's Abbey and York Minster, Tansy Davies' new opera Elephant & Castle at the Aldeburgh Festival, Euridice (Orfeo ed Euridice) for Ryedale Festival, and Princess Sofie in the premiere of Jonathan Dove's The Two Hearts of Kwasi Boachi for Opera O.T. in Rotterdam.
